Welcome to the Lakeside Communities' Service Center Webpage ___________________________________________________________ The Lakeside Communities’ Service Center, formerly the Glades Area Branch, first opened on November 21, 1989 and was the vision of Mrs. Irvin Zumpf, a benefactress of the Red Cross, and Mr. Richard Turner. Turner, a member of the Red Cross Board of Directors, saw a need to improve services to residents living in Florida’s western communities. The Board challenged the local chapter to raise money to cover the new location’s expenses. After raising $9,400, the service center opened.
In February 2009, the Lakeside Communities’ Service Center relocated to a new office at 206 East Sugarland Highway in Clewiston, allowing Red Cross volunteers to more quickly respond to local disasters because it’s in the center of the territory covered by the Lakeside Communities’ Service Center. The new 860 square foot location includes two offices and a classroom meeting space. In 1996, the Greater Palm Beach Area Chapter began serving Hendry County and in 2002, the Chapter expanded to include Glades County. Today, the Service Center delivers life-saving programs to these counties and parts of Palm Beach County, including the communities of Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay.
Hero Spotlight Iglesia De Dios Pentecostal (Church of God) in Clewiston joined the Lakeside Communities' Service Center Heroes Campaign and is already hard at work to raise their $1,000 commitment. Saturday the church had a car wash at the Advance Auto Parts store in Clewiston to get started. Coming Saturday, May 9th the group will be at the Walmart in Clewiston selling B.B.Q. so please go support thier efforts and at the same time eat some great food. Lakeside Communities' is so thankful to have locals organizations willing to help us fulfill the Red Cross Mission. Rev. Benjamin Escorcia along with his wife Ines, members and youth
washed cars in the hot sun with smiles on their faces to raise funds.
Congratulations to Barbara Saddler on receiving the Richard Turner West County Service Center Award. Barbara has been a volunteer with the Lakeside Communities' Service Center since 2005. She has been trained in all aspects of disaster services. In the last 4 years Barbara has responded to many single family house fires in the Western Palm Beach County communities giving comfort and assistance to fire clients. Barbara stepped up and took on the role as Shelter Manager in Western Palm Beach County during Tropical Storm Fay where she is currently in that position for the upcoming season. Our service center in the past year has had to open multi-family shelters and cold shelters multiple times, Barbara was always available to lend her expertise rather it be at disasters, festivals, events or special projects in the service center. Thank you Barbara for your commitment and support to your local Red Cross Chapter.
